Retired American, tired of Costa Rica... seriously considering moving to BA, and visiting in mid January 2008 to check it out.

I visited BA for a week several years ago, and have good memories of life in BA. Which areas are best to get to know for a single man looking to settle down and enjoy an active social life?

I plan to rent several months, then buy an apartment when I know areas.

All suggestions will be appreciated.
